Cream Crested Legbar Eggs - cluckychookie - 23-06-2010

Pleased to report that Daisy May has laid her first little egg today The bad news is that is a standard egg colour!

Is there any hope they will develop into blue or have I got a duff chook

By standard egg colour I presume you mean it is a tinted beige colour, if so then she won't be laying blue eggs I'm afraid. Are you sure she is meant to be a Cream Legbar and not a Skyline or something similar?

Yes I guess it is a tinted beige. Its slightly different from the light sussex eggs from Doris. She was bought as a pure breed from a well known breeder and was from a blue egg laying strain so I was expecting blue! That was the main reason for buying that breed in the first place! Never mind I guess I'll have to put an araucana on the shopping list for next time!

If she is not laying a blue egg then she most certainly is not a Cream Crested Legbar, but she could be a Legbar - you get them in gold and they lay a tinted egg. Are you sure that is not what you've bought? Has she got a tuft on her head?

I asked the breeder for a blue egg layer and was given the choice of 2 hens, one was a darker colour than the other which is the one I picked, this is her....

Well she certainly looks like a CCL - are you sure it is her that laid the egg?

Yeah sure it was her, caught her in the nest box today and because I only have 4 other girls that lay I know all the egg colours, this was a tiny one and all but Doris have laid today but she prefers to lay in the afternoon usually I guess this is payback for having a bluebell that lays green tinted eggs! Well fed up about it though I guess thats chooks for you!

I would call the breeder and tell them, if they are decent then they should replace her

Oh dear what a shame, my legbar hens lay from china egg blue through to greeny.. they do look very similar to your hen but beige is not the right egg colour for a CCL!

There used to be a silver as well but it died out and seeing as the gold's are so lovely, who needs silver

This is the second one I've had from them, the first wouldn't get over a cold and although she was older, never laid whilst I had her. They were more than happy to exchange for another girl but I will still drop them an email and let them know. To be fair, Daisy May II has been the picture of health. She follows me around the garden with the dog (I have proof terriers and chooks can co exsist )and is happy to be picked up so I couldn't part with her now I guess I'll just have to add cream eggs to the collection and put a blue layer on the shopping list for my next chook.

Sorry to throw a cat amongst the chickens but I have both CCL and Skylines and yours looks more like one of my skylines. Much redder colouring on breast and less distinction between feather colouring - what I mean is - almost CCL but not quite as neat. Perhaps she was Skyline x CCL (could that be possible). Anyway, point is, no guarantee of blue eggs with a skyline - something like 70% chance I believe. All mine do blue (although getting much paler with age) - just luck of the draw I guess. Very nice looking lady you have there either way.

Cream Crested Legbar Eggs - cluckychookie - 24-06-2010

Thanks April - she is lovely but I'm really disapointed about the egg colour as I bought her as a pure breed (and paid a pure breed price!) from a well known breeder in Lincs. I was expecting blue eggs feom her and we checked when we bought her that she should lay that colour but she was only 18 weeks when I got her so she hadn't laid at that point. I have emailed and told them but as I wouldn't want to give her up now as she's such a friendly girl I doubt there is anything that can be done. It just makes me nervous when buying new hens as I apear to have problems every time even though I've used different breeders. I guess thats just part of the course with chooks.

I may have to go for an Araucana next but I don't have any more room at the moment unless I build a pen at the allotment....
