Feather names, patterns and clipping wings!


It is  usually not necessary to clip wing feathers, but sometimes birds fly to where they are not supposed to! You can clip the ends of the primary flight feathers on one wing only - do this when the feathers are fully grown and only on mature birds. The process is quite straightforward, painless to the bird, and hampers the bird's ability to 'fly' due to imbalanced caused by having one wing shorter than the other. The diagram below shows where to cut - do not cut into any dark area on the feather shaft.
